Mr. Escalante

I think that Mr. Escalante is a good teacher in many ways. He expects great things out of his students, he cares about their education, he believes in them and challenges them. At the beginning of the year, Mr. Escalante's class was learning basic math skills like adding and multiplying. He expected them to rise to the occasion and learn what he was teaching. He interacted with the students in ways which they could relate to and he engaged them, like when he had the class repeat "a negative times a negative equals a positive". He also taught his students good habits like turning in their homework (girl had to sit in a chair in front of the classroom because she didn't do her homework) on time and arriving to class on time (students would shout "late! late! late!" if anyone walked in late). So there were consequences for their actions. The students seemed like they had gotten away with many things including may pranks, which seemed to be the norm, so I think Mr. Escalante was being a good teacher by disciplining them.
    Mr. Escalante also showed that he cared about his students education like when he saw that Ana had to drop out of school to work at her family's restaurant. He sat down and talked to her father about how she wanted to go to medical school and her father just brushed if off because he thought she could never achieve that . That was probably the first time a teacher had cared about Ana's education. She ended up coming back to school.
   I think that Mr. Escalante knows that if you care about your students and set a level of expectation, they will rise to it. The other faculty members may have set expectations but without the caring part of it, the students probably didn't feel like their work mattered.
    Those are some of the reasons why I think Mr. Escalante is a good teacher.
